We decided to help you be original this week and give you a list of vintage songs that have a boudoir and cheeky twist to them.

“THE DJ IS FREE!”

“THE DJ IS FREE!”

I receive calls every day asking. “How much does it cost for a DJ?” As a professional entertainer, I resist the temptation to make a snappy comeback. But once, just once, I thought it would be fun if the conversation went a little something like this:

Caller: “Hi, I’m calling to find out how much a DJ costs”

Me: “Just a DJ? They’re free.”

Caller: “Free? You mean it costs nothing at all?”

Me: “Sure! Well, you may have to feed him. Come on over and get him!”

Caller: “Huh? Don’t you come to me?”

Me: “Well, I guess we could put him in a taxi, but I have to charge you for that.”

Caller: “That’s fine. It’s for a party next month. Do you have enough speakers and stuff for 200 people?”

Me: “SPEAKERS! Well, now you’re gonna have to spend some money! Speakers and equipment cost extra. And we’re gonna need a truck, because the taxi won’t haul our equipment. You said you wanted just a DJ!”

Caller: “Well, I need somebody to like, you know, set it up, and play the music and all that.”

Me: “MUSIC! You want music, too? We gotta charge you for that, too! Music isn’t free, you know!”

Caller: “Well, yeah, I guess there’s copyrights and all that. Oh, and do you have some cool lights to make it exciting and all?”

Me: “WOW! Speakers, music, and lights, that’s gonna add up. We have all the latest lighting: intelligent lights, color changing lights, laser light shows, we can even put your name in lights for you.”

Caller: “That’s cool! We want all of that. And could the DJ like, make some announcements, and get everybody up dancing and having a good time, maybe do some games and contests?

Me: “Well, that will require a microphone, and someone with some MC experience. He needs to have thorough knowledge of all different kinds of music, and know how to read a crowd and respond with exactly what they like. It costs more if you need somebody like that.”

Caller: “Yeah, that’s what we want! Oh, and we have a lot of people who like the photo/videobooth idea. Can you bring that?”

Me: “Yes, ma’am, we do all of that. It sounds like what you need is more than just a DJ.”

Caller: “That’s great. So how much will this cost me?”

Me: “Well, that depends. Where and when is your party?”

Caller: “Why does that matter? Don’t you just have one set fee?”

Me: “No, of course not. Everybody wants the most popular dates. We usually end up turning away six customers on a popular Saturday, and almost never book a Tuesday. Due to simple supply and demand, I can offer you a lower price on slow days, (Mon-Thur) but must charge more on the most popular dates. Just like the airlines and popular vacation spots.”

Caller: “Wow, I never thought of that, but I guess that makes sense. I suppose it matters where it is, too?”

Me: “Right, we need to factor in travel time, and perhaps overnight lodging. We need to know if the banquet room is on the ground floor, or if it is accessible by elevator or ramps. We need to know how much time, how many staff members will be needed to setup and break down equipment, and how much equipment to bring for your set up. And we need to know if the venue has special requirements, such as requiring a certificate of insurance and proof of business license or if they have special time constraints and that sort of thing.”

Caller: “Sounds complicated. All this for just a DJ?”

Me: “No, the DJ is free, remember? All the rest is what you pay for a professional entertainment job.”

Caller: “Ok, that sounds good, I’ll take it.”

Me: “Would you like an experienced and talented DJ with that? Because that will cost a LOT more!”

Timeline Tip Tuesday – Dance Help!

Being a DJ isn’t just about playing the music. Sure, it’s a HUGE part, but your event would be somewhat of a disaster if there was no organization to the way the music was played. Kristin at Our DJ Rocks will guarantee that you have all the music played when you want it to be played. You can call her somewhat of your “music coordinator” because she will take the time to sit down with you and create a timeline of your whole entire ceremony and reception.

Of course this isn’t always easy. With this comes many questions and problems, and that is why Our DJ Rocks wants to bring you Timeline Tip Tuesday. Every other week we will answer frequently asked questions when it comes to the timeline of the music at your event! This weeks question is…

What Should I Choose for my First Dance Song?

IMG 1732 web Timeline Tip Tuesday Dance Help!Photo by: Victoria Angela Wedding Photography

Bride: We’re still having an issue picking out our first dance song. Our top two options are “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colby Caillat, or “Two Sleepy People” by Seth Macfarlane and Sara Bareilles, but we’re dancing a waltz and those songs are not in waltz time. We could totally fudge the waltz and make it our own, but I’m still fishing through hundreds of waltz songs to find one we both like…and that takes a remarkably long time :/

Our DJ Rocks: Don’t fret! both of those options can be great! One thing we would suggest is to maybe use one for a first dance and the other one either A: for your cake cutting or B: a last dance after the last dance, when everyone is lined up for the grand exit, you and your husband can be e ALONE and just take 2 miinutes to soak in the evening. : ) How romantic?!?!

Yoga Poses to Boost Energy

After putting on a yoga class for our very own brides, we decided it was only appropriate to post more about the art of Yoga since we love it so much. All of us our busy with work, school, kids, or whatever it may be, and we all know how hard it is to keep energized throughout all this. It’s important to capture every benefit of being awake as possible. If you just take a few minutes out of your day with the poses we have provided, you can be guaranteed to gain a little more of that energy back. Studies have shown that some yoga can actually reduce your fatigue and adjust our hormone cortisol.

Modified Down-Dog Split

Raise your right heel toward the ceiling as high as you can, then slowly lower your left forearm to the floor. Keep both palms flat on the floor.

Can clients hire their own vendors (caterer, coordinator, DJ, etc.), or must they select from a preferred vendor list? If they can bring their own, do you have a list of recommended vendors? No Outside Catering is Allowed unless its for religious/ cultural reasons, like Jewish or Indian Weddings where catering needs are a bit more intense.  We recommend our preferred vendors list, however, guests can bring in their own vendors, as long as they show a valid proof of insurance & Business License. The outside vendors must also agree and sign the off-sight vendor agreement and adhere to all resort rules/regulations.

Who is responsible for setting up and tearing down the décor at your venue? Our banquets team will set up all tables/linen that are in house – anything being brought in by a vendor must be set-up and broken down by that vendor. Each vendor must also sign the off-sight vendor agreement and adhere to all resort rules/regulations.

How early can they get into the site to set up? Varies. But the standard is 2 hours.

How many weddings will be booked on my day? Maximum of 2 weddings per day (1 day, 1 evening – not including intimates)

What is the most unique menu that you have served at a wedding?  Since we are just shy of 3 months being opened, we have not hosted our first big wedding… YET! But we definitely have some really unique cuisine chose for future weddings we will have at the WGO, like Risotto Action Stations & a DIY Sushi Making Rehearsal Dinner. Everyone loves to be involved now in their food  & plus it makes the experience fun & memorable.

For more information, please visit their website HERE and let them know that you found out all about their venue from OUR DJ ROCKS!
